Panels

The biennial offers a range of panels and performances gathering designers, curators, critics, philosophers, artists, chefs and many more in the Galata Greek Primary School, Studio-X Istanbul and Alt Art Space to explore new ideas and ask critical questions about design.

Studio-X Istanbul

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial initiated a major long-term research project into the last two centuries of design from Turkey. Entitled Turkey Design Chronology, it is an attempt to bring together different fields within a time frame starting from the Ottoman Tanzimat reform era until today. One component of the project entitled Archive of the Ephemeral seeks to become a visual source on objects and spaces, through a collection of family photos and found photographs. The large interdisciplinary team of experts in different fields called Curious Assembly coordinated by Pelin Derviş seeks to spark debate and reach others who may partake in these dialogues by highlighting an interconnected selection

Every saturday the Curious Assembly will organize a series of meetings with experts contributing with their questions and share ideas. Meetings will be held in Turkish only unless otherwise noted.

Children and Youth Workshop and Events

The Children and Youth Workshops prepared by İnformel Eğitim-çocukistanbul challenge current conceptions of design to set the stage for a liveable and sustainable future. These workshops are offered only in Turkish.

Workshops

SPECULATIVE DESIGN, BAGHDAD 800 – ISTANBUL 2048
20 November, Sunday, 13.00-17.00, Studio-X Istanbul
Tutor: Ayhan Ayteş, with Jussi Parikka.

The 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial is hosting a workshop titled “Speculative Design, Baghdad 800 – Istanbul 2048” under the moderation of Dr. Ayhan Ayteş. To be held on 20 November at the biennial venue Studio-X Istanbul, the workshop is inviting artists and designers to engage with questions on alternative pasts and futures and design fictions in relation to the Islamic and Middle-East legacies of technology and design. As a point of reference, the workshop will use “A Media Archaeology of Ingenious Pasts: Middle-East Pasts and Futurisms” exhibition that features technical objects reflecting the legacy of mathematics, astronomy, architecture, technology and automata in the Middle East.

The workshop will discuss and try out methodologies and ideas towards such speculative design pieces. The outcome could be works of design and science fiction based on a “what if”: What if this legacy has been able to gather such momentum that the advanced technological age would have been branded by this alternative technological heritage? What if the computer age would have started already in 1200? How do we start thinking design differently with such a set of imaginary media, speculative design questions that also focus on alternative lineages of geopolitics?
Through a speculation of an alternative past and alternative future of technological society and a geopolitical situation, this workshop would seek to draw conceptual inspiration from similar speculative sense in imaginary media and media archaeology; afro-futurism, alternative modernities and design fiction.

Workshop questions include:
○ How can we use that wider rich body of material as a basis for alternative ideas, approaches, geopolitics etc. in
media/design.
○ How can we connect it to already existing topics such as Gulf Futurism, or Arab Futurism, media archaeology,
or other sorts of ways where histories of technology and visual culture from that period to for example
Ottoman periods can be also tweaked in relation to imaginary histories, designs and critical debates.
○ How can such design and artistic work contribute to a different set of an understanding of contemporary culture of technology?
Attendance requirements:
○ University students in their junior and senior years, master’s and PhD students and recent graduates may
attend the workshop.
○ Students of or graduates from artistic, design and architecture fields are eligible to apply to the workshop.

The capacity of the workshop is limited with 12 participants, which necessitates advance reservations. The language
of the workshop is English. Please fill in the form and submit it to atolye@iksv.org to apply.

SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION DESIGN WORKSHOP
3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, H&M and the Consulate General of Sweden are inviting young designers to participate in the workshop titled “Sustainability in Fashion Design”.

The workshop aiming to generate fresh ideas for the concept of sustainability in fashion by adopting a responsible approach, will be an efficient platform for young designers to show their creativity.

H&M, as the sponsor, and the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sweden and Swedish Institute, are organising a workshop for young designers and students that focus on bringing the concepts of sustainability and design together. During the project, young designers will be asked to create outfits by combining new materials, eco-friendly innovative manufacturing models and design. They will get the chance to be introduced to the fashion industry, the concept of contemporary fashion, and the biennial. The outcomes of the workshop will be presented in the format of an installation and will meet the audience during the biennial.

The workshop will be held between June 17-21 at IMA, Istanbul Moda Academy. H&M Global Material Business Development Manager Hülya Sevindik Özyiğit, designer Johanna Törnqwist and fashion designer Mehtap Elaidi will be the workshop leaders.

At the end of the workshop, one of the participating young designers will be chosen by a jury and rewarded with a job or internship opportunity at H&M’s Production Office in Istanbul and an H&M gift card.

* The workshop is only open to the participants from Turkey.

Academy Programme

The 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial will host exhibitions through the Academy Programme, like the previous editions, which will offer a whole other rich perspective from a scholarly viewpoint. The Academy Programme will include products and ideas created through workshops, competitions and projects by various universities from all around Turkey. The academies will reflect their own approaches of the biennial theme, “ARE WE HUMAN? : The Design of the Species : 2 seconds, 2 days, 2 years, 200 years, 200,000 years”.

Design Routes

3rd Istanbul Design Biennial bears witness to the “design stories” in a multitude of mediums as penned by workshops, shops and spaces of production located in 6 different quarters spanning both sides of Istanbul. In an effort to brush against all stages of multidisciplinary design practices in districts of historical and cultural significance, these routes demonstrate the timelessness of design by embracing the city’s architectural edifices as well.

*Tours with a sign-up number below 5 will be cancelled.
